Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is a national reading incentive competition sponsored by Gallaudet University through its Youth Programs office. Students will read books and come together in groups to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they’ve ready. The purpose of Battle of the Books is to promote literacy, the spirit of academic competition, good sportsmanship and encourage critical thinking skills. There are three different divisions that students will be placed into based on their reading level. This program is offered to students in grades 5-8 who are Deaf or hard of hearing and receiving special education services. 

When: 

Preliminaries: November 12-14, 2024

Finals: November 19-December 6, 2024

Nationals: March 28-31, 2025

Where: 

Primaries: In person at a designated location in Nebraska

Playoffs: In person at a designated location in Nebraska

Nationals: For teams that qualify, Washington D.C.

Academic Bowl
Academic Bowl is an annual competition sponsored by Gallaudet University through its Youth Programs office. It is for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in grades 9-12. Academic Bowl Teams consist of 3 to 4 players who compete in Ranking Tests, Regional competitions and a National Academic Bowl competition. The purpose of the Academic Bowl is to foster the pursuit of academic excellence, promote a spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship, and encourage social opportunities and collegiality among students.
 

When: 

Screening Test: October 28-November 1, 2024

Midwest Regionals: February 13-16, 2025 

Nationals: April 17-21, 2025

Where: 

Screening Test: Designated location in Nebraska that will be determined at a later date

Midwest Regionals: Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind

Nationals: For teams that qualify, Washington D.C. at Gallaudet University

Statewide Sign Classes

The Nebraska Regional Programs is excited to be offering a 7 week virtual sign class for individuals interested in learning or improving their sign skills. There will be 2 tracks for participants; a beginner track and an intermediate track. There will also be a class taught in Spanish for any participants who would like that option.

Pioneer Village

Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to our one day student event at Pioneer Village in Minden, Nebraska.  Students will learn about how America grew and how their life changed throughout the decades through the many exhibits.   

When: Thursday, September 26, 2024

Where: Pioneer Village; Minden, Nebraska

Space Camp

Nebraska Regional Programs 8th, 9th, or 10th grade students who is Deaf or hard of hearing that meets all of the eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply to attend this educational experience!  Space Camp is a Future Astronaut Training Program (FATP) developed from authentic astronaut training, FATP motivates campers by emphasizing the importance of teamwork, leadership and problem solving. Campers train in the Cosmosphere’s camp simulators. They also build and launch rockets, tour the Hall of Space Museum and explore the night sky. FATP is an internationally recognized camp that combines space science education with exciting astronaut-training activities. When: October 6-11, 2024

Students will miss school all week. Students will be responsible for making up any work they missed, but will have time in the evenings to work on homework if needed.

Where: Cosmosphere Space Museum (Hutchinson, KS)

Registration: Additional eligibility requirements must be met and all three steps of the registration process need to be completed by September 20, 2024.

Step 2: Complete the recommendation form (both students and staff must fill out the form so please allow time for staff to complete).

Step 3: Students must write a 250-word essay about why they want to go to Space Camp and what they hope to learn. This essay can be handwritten or typed and emailed and returned to SNRP. Students are welcome to use this page but they do not have to.

Would you like to connect with a Nebraska peer who is also Deaf or hard of hearing?  SNRP would love to match you up with a friend to correspond with through our pen pal program!  This is a great opportunity to meet and connect with new friends.  In the future, you may also get the opportunity to meet your pen pal in person at one of our SNRP or statewide activities!
